Salou is a popular beach resort ideal for family vacations. Salou is situated on the Costa Dorada in the north east of Spain. The town of Salou has many beaches, which are separated by rocky coves. The main beach in Salou is called Llevant beach. This is a white sand beach with crystal clear waters in the middle of the town. Some of the other nearby beaches are; Platja de Ponent, Platja dels Capellans, Platja Llarga and Cala Crancs. Apart from swimming and sunbathing Salou’s beaches also offer excellent conditions to practice water sports. Especially popular in Salou is windsurfing. But you can also go on a banana boat trip, or tour around the Mediterranean Sea on an organised boat trip.

From Salou you can easily explore the wider region; there are many nice places to go to. Take a trip to Tarragona. This authentic Spanish village with its enchanting atmosphere will bring you back through history. Here you can stroll around beautiful plazas, sit down in nice cafes, and enjoy the historic riches of the roman amphitheatre, another worth while visiting and nearby village is the fisher’s village of Cambrills. Go here to have some of the best sea food in the region at one of the many seafood restaurants. From Salou it’s also possible to go on a daytrip to Barcelona.

Visit Masia Catalana

There are also some interesting sights in the town Salou itself. One of them is the Masia Catalana. Here you can admire typical Catalan houses, old build in authentic style. During the summer months you will also find many local hand craft workers here selling their goods at the market. Other sights in the old town are the Torre Vella, a historic defence tower. You can also book a sightseeing tour. Popular are the mountain bike tours that explore the beautiful surroundings of Salou and the coastline of the Costa Dorada.

Port Aventura is a must see attraction!

If you are travelling with children take them on a trip to the Port Aventura theme park. This is one of the best theme parks in Europe. Next to the theme park there is the Port Aventura Aquatic Park. Both of them are situated just outside the town. These parks are owned by Universals. Also entertaining is the House of Illusions. In the House of Illusions dinner shows take place where a team of magicians show their tricks. And then there is the Aqualeon Costa Dorada, this is a water and Safari park outside Salou in the town of Albinyana.

The beaches can get crowded during the summer. If the crowds are getting too much for you go check out the quieter beaches a bit further away. Most of them are protected by coves. Look after your things and leave valuables in your hotel room.

Getting there and around

To get around the town rent a scooter or go by foot. There are also busses and taxis that can bring you anywhere. The nearest airport is Reus International Airport, which is only 15 minutes away from Salou. Other options are to fly to Barcelona El Prat Airport or Girona Airport and continue from there by bus or train. Flights go from various European cities. You may also be able to find some cheap charter flights to Salou or to nearby Barcelona. Salou can also be reached by bus, train, or car. There are international buses that leave from European cities like Amsterdam and Brussels.
